Title
Consider An Ordinance Amending The Number Of Authorized Firefighter And Apparatus Operator Civil Service Positions Within The Carrollton Fire Department.
Body
BACKGROUND:
The purpose of this agenda item is to amend Ordinance No. 4526, which was passed by the City Council on October 10, 2023. It designates the number of positions in each classification of Firefighters in the Carrollton Fire Department. This proposed amendment reflects changes in the number of authorized Firefighter positions from 82 to 76, and authorized Apparatus Operator positions from 51 to 57. The change in the number of the specific classifications does not change the total number of authorized positions within the Fire Department.
This item is an amendment to the current ordinance to ensure that the Department maintains the correct number of Apparatus Operators assigned to the Operations Division. Three of the reclassifications are due to reassignments to fill vacancies created by retirements and promotions in the Fire Prevention Division, and the additional three approved reclassifications are to fill the new Apparatus Operator positions on the tractor-drawn aerial apparatus.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Funding for three reclassified Apparatus Operator positions will be absorbed in the Fire Department's existing budget, and the other three reclassifications were included in the Fire Department's FY24 operating budget.
IMPACT ON COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY:
The reclassification of the six Apparatus Operator positions will positively impact the Operations Division. It will ensure that there are enough Apparatus Operators to fill all of the current assigned Apparatus Operator positions and maintain the needed experience level while reducing the need for out-of-position assignments.
