Background:
Staff is proposing amendments to the Tree Preservation Ordinance, including:
1) Permitting Tree Reforestation Funds to be utilized for both the planting of trees and the associated irrigation system required. Currently, funds can be used only for the planting of trees.
2) Coordinating the Protected Species List between the Tree Preservation Ordinance and Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance Article 25.
3) Cleanup of procedural language throughout the ordinance, including correcting language pertaining to appeal and variance processes.
On July 21, 2026, staff presented proposed changes to the Tree Preservation Ordinance to the Redevelopment Committee, who unanimously recommended advancement to City Council.
Financial Implications:
There are no direct financial impacts to the city to process the amendments to the Tree Preservation Ordinance.
Impact on Community Sustainability:
The Tree Preservation Ordinance recognizes that trees are of great value in the conservation of natural resources, purify the air, are known to add property value and enhance a positive image of the city.
Staff Recommendation/Action Desired:
Staff recommends approval of the ordinance adopting the amendments to the Tree Preservation Ordinance to be effective immediately.
