Title

Consider An Ordinance To Amend The Authorized Number Of Firefighter Civil Service Positions And The Total Number Of Classified Positions Within The Carrollton Fire Department.

Body

BACKGROUND:

On January 5, 2016 the City Council approved Ordinance No. 3720 designating the number of positions in each classification of firefighter within the Carrollton Fire Department.  The proposed ordinance amendments are necessary due to the addition of one sub-apparatus operator position (EMS Support Specialist) and one captain position (Training Captain) in the Fire Department’s FY 2017 budget.  These ordinance changes are required and regulated by the Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 143.

The total number of authorized sub-apparatus operator positions will increases from 28 positions to 29 positions. The number of authorized captain positions will increase from 31 to 32.  Therefore, the total number of classified positions within the Department will increase from 159 positions to 161.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Funding for these two new positions is contained in the Fire Department’s FY 2017 operating budget.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION/ACTION DESIRED:

Staff recommends City Council approval of the attached ordinance amending Ordinance No. 3720 which increases the number of authorized sub-apparatus operator and captain positions, and increases the total number of classified positions within the Fire Department.
