Title

Consider An Ordinance Amending The Code Of Ordinances Through The Amendment Of Chapter 73, “Traffic Schedules,” Schedule I (C), Relating To Speed Limits Of 35 Miles Per Hour On Established Streets; Establishing A Temporary Speed Limit Of 35 Miles Per Hour For Old Denton Road, From Frankford Road To Rosemeade Parkway; Providing For A Penalty; Providing Savings And Severability Clauses; And Establishing An Effective Date.

Body

BACKGROUND:

In February of 2016, a temporary speed limit ordinance was created to reduce the speed limit for the portion of Old Denton Road under construction between Trinity Mills Road/PGBT and Frankford Road. This spring the portion of Old Denton Road between Frankford Road and Rosemeade Parkway is planned to begin construction.  Staff is recommending that a temporary construction speed limit zone of 35 mph be established for Phase II of the Old Denton Road construction project.  Construction workers will be working in close proximity to vehicles traveling on Old Denton Road, which experiences a high level of traffic.  This temporary speed limit change is intended to improve safety in the construction area for the workers and vehicles passing through the construction zone.  The current 40 mph speed limit will be re-established once construction is completed.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Funding for the required temporary speed limit signs has been included in the construction contract for Old Denton Road.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION/ACTION DESIRED:

Staff recommends that City Council approve an ordinance establishing a temporary 35 mph speed limit for Old Denton Road between Frankford Road and Rosemeade Parkway.
