Title

Consider An Ordinance To Amend The Authorized Number Of Fire Fighter Positions Within The Carrollton Fire Department.

Body

BACKGROUND:

On February 21, 2017, City Council approved an ordinance designating the number of positions in each classification of fire fighters in the Carrollton Fire Department.  This proposed amendment is necessary to reflect the addition of four (4) fire fighter positions which were approved in the FY 2017-18 budget.  This ordinance amendment is required and regulated by the Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 143.

This ordinance amendment reflects that the total number of authorized fire fighter positions will increase from 61 to 65 positions.  The total number of classified positions within the Fire Department will increase by four, from 161 to 165.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Funding for the four additional fire fighter positions is available in the Fire Operations FY 2017-18 operating budget.

IMPACT ON COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY:

The addition of these positions will positively impact the Operations Division by decreasing the need to hire personnel on an overtime basis in order to maintain minimum staffing levels.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION/ACTION DESIRED:

Staff recommends City Council approval of the attached ordinance to increase the number of authorized fire fighter positions to 65. The total number of classified positions within the Fire Department will increase to 165.
