Consider An Ordinance Amending The Code Of Ordinances, Chapter 73 “Traffic Schedules,” Schedule I, To Revise The Limits Of The Existing School Speed Limit Zone For That Portion Of Creek Valley Boulevard From The North Curb Line Of Hebron Parkway To 1,135 Feet North Of The North Curb Line Of Hebron Parkway.

BACKGROUND:
The school speed zone segment along Creek Valley Boulevard currently extends from the north curb line of Hebron Parkway to 1,135 feet north of the north curb line of Hebron Parkway.
During the spring 2017 semester, a crosswalk was added outside of the school zone at Shoshone Way crossing Creek Valley Boulevard. Prior to the addition of the crosswalk, a pedestrian study found that students were crossing Creek Valley Boulevard midblock at multiple locations north of the school. Five students were counted crossing at Shoshone Way at that time. Since installing the crosswalk, the various midblock crossings have consolidated at Shoshone Way. Recent counts show that pedestrian crossings have increased to twenty-three. Due to the increase in pedestrian traffic, additional protection is needed at this location. To encompass the crosswalk at Shoshone Way, the school zone would need to be extended an additional 665 feet along Creek Valley Boulevard, for a total length of 1,800 feet.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Funding for necessary adjustments to school speed zones has been allocated in the annual operating budget.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION/ACTION DESIRED:
Staff recommends that City Council approve the attached ordinance revising the extent of the school zone for Creek Valley Boulevard.
