Title

Consider An Ordinance Ordering Cancellation Of The Joint Election On May 2, 2020 For The Election Of Councilmembers Place 4 And 6 And Declaring The Election Of Those Unopposed Candidates For Councilmembers Places 4 And 6.

Body

BACKGROUND:

Per the Governor’s proclamation, the City Council postponed the contested races for the May 2, 2020 General Election to November 3, 2020. In accordance with the Secretary of State’s interpretation, the holdover provisions set forth in the Governor’s proclamation do not apply to uncontested elections, and such uncontested elections should be cancelled, even where contested elections remain on the ballot. City Council Places 4 and 6 are uncontested; therefore, those the election for these two places shall be cancelled and the unopposed candidates shall be declared elected, with their certificates of election issued at the time elections would have been canvassed.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION/ACTION DESIRED:
