BACKGROUND:
The State of Texas sponsors a Texas Music Office within the Office of the Governor at the Capitol in Austin. They offer a Music-Friendly Community Certification program for Cities around the State, to recognize notable communities who promote and host major music offerings. There are many Cities in the State and our region who have qualified for this program, which offers unique branding opportunities for Cities, along with increased exposure and intra-City networking opportunities. In exchange, the State collects data on music events.

This program requires the creation of a music advisory committee, which would advocate for music offerings and provide a recommending body for Council regarding music within the City.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
There is no explicit cost for participation in this program, other than a small amount of staff time each month to assemble data to report to the State.

IMPACT ON COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY:
This program designation would provide State-wide recognition for the high-quality music offerings that are already occurring within the City and could produce stronger interest in the future from potential musical artists, venue operators, instructional facilities and concert promoters. The Texas Music Office has shared that tourists from around the State and beyond use this resource to plan trips to communities who place a strong emphasis on music offerings.
